O laboratório irá explorar áreas como o da aprendizagem das máquinaa – fazendo com que computadores classifiquem e analisem dados com base na experiência anterior. Isso é útil para funções como a tradução, pesquisas de imagem e reconhecimento de comando de voz. “Na verdade, acho que a aprendizagem de máquina quântica pode fornecer o processo de resolução de problemas mais criativos de acordo com as leis conhecidas da física”, diz um post no blog do Google que descreve o negócio.

A colaboração liderada pelo Google é apenas o segundo cliente a comprar computador da empresa D-Wave Systems Inc., que é baseada em Burnaby, no Canadá. A gigante Aerospace Lockheed Martin, com sede em Bethesda, Maryland-USA, foi a primeira cliente. A Lockheed adquiriu um computador quântico D-Wave em 2011 e o instalou em um novo Centro de Computação Quântica da Universidade do Sul da Califórnia (USC), em Los Angeles. A D-Wave se recusa a revelar o preço de seus computadores.

Ambos os centros de computação quântica – um na USC e um em Ames – tem reservado 20% do seu tempo de computador para acesso por pesquisadores externos.”A julgar pelas solicitações de terceiros que tivemos, eu diria que deve haver muita procura – provavelmente mais do que pode ser acomodado”, diz Daniel Lidar, diretor do centro da USC. Até agora, as pessoas têm usado na maior parte destas máquinas para explorar possíveis aplicações da computação quântica e para investigar como o computador se comporta, ao invés de resolver os problemas anteriormente não respondidos por outras máquinas.

Modelo alternativo

O computador D-Wave é incomum porque ele usa bits quânticos (qubits) – Bits de que podem existir em dois estados, ligado e desligado, simultaneamente – para acelerar os cálculos, e porque não funciona no modelo normal de “gate” da computação, em que portas lógicas são usadas para manipular esses bits. Em vez disso, é um computador “adiabático”, que lê em voz alta o estado fundamental de seus qubits para encontrar uma solução.

A comunidade acadêmica tem favorecido o modelo de gates (Portas), que tem uma teoria melhor desenvolvida por trás dele. Mas o modelo adiabático provou ser muito mais fácil construir, permitindo a D-Wave dobrar de tamanho o seu processador a cada ano. O modelo D-Wave Two tem 512 qubits.

Computadores adiabáticos são particularmente adequados para a resolução de “problemas de otimização”, em que uma série de critérios lutam todos para ser atendidos ao mesmo tempo. Um exemplo é tentar encontrar a dobra de menor energia para uma proteína, os vários aminoácidos de que atraem ou repelem de forma diferente.

O computador D-Wave não é um computador “universal” que pode ser programado para enfrentar qualquer tipo de problema. Mas os cientistas descobriram que pode ser útil para formular perguntas na pesquisa de aprendizado de máquinas (ajudar computadores a pensar por si mesmos), como problemas de otimização.

D-Wave lutou para provar que seu computador realmente opera em um nível quântico, e que é melhor ou mais rápido do que um computador convencional. Antes de fechar o acordo mais recente, os potenciais clientes definiram uma série de testes para o computador quântico.

A D-Wave contratou um perito externo no algoritmo de corridas, que concluíram que a velocidade da D-Wave Two foi acima da média global, e que era 3.600 vezes mais rápido do que um computador convencional líder quando se trabalha com o tipo específico de problema que o computador quântico foi construído para resolver.

Se a D-Wave vai fazer máquinas cada vez mais rápidas ou melhores sistemas de inteligência artificial ainda está para ser visto.
